In a physical match, both Dorian Dervite and Gilberto intercepted crosses into the area in the early stages, but the closest either team came to scoring was a twelfth minute turn and shot by Danny Rose, but it was just too high.  Alex Smith hit a pass diagonally to Kyle Fraser-Allen and he cut inside to fire a shot at goal, but he was unlucky to see it rebound off the foot of the post. 

In the 35th minute, Troy Archibald-Henville nodded down a corner and Simon Dawkins latched onto it, slashing a shot goalwards, which deflected off defender Addison's head and over the crossbar.  The Derby defender was very involved and having already sandwiched Fraser-Allen with Kean, he slid into Jacques Maghoma with his studs showing and received an immediate red card in the 38th minute.

Five minutes before the break, Gilberto's break down the left wing saw him pull the ball back for Maghoma, but the striker missed the target when well placed.  Five minutes the other side of the interval and Gilberto was the creator again, making an opening for Rose to volley too high.  It was all Spurs and Dawkins had a shot blocked by Kean after Fraser-Allen had crossed to him.  Rose's 58th minute corner saw Archibald-Henville head wide and then Rose himself had a chance, with a shot that Forde got a touch on to take wide.

As the game reached 72 minutes, Jon Obika got into the box following nice work from Rose and Dawkins.  Once there, Johnson felled him before he had a chance to shoot and he got up to take the spot-kick to make it 1-0.

Keeper Kean could not reach Makura Mtandari's header from a corner, but it flew over the bar, then Rose hit a shot well wide and was thwarted by Kean, leaving a final effort by Smith to fly way too high from 30 yards failing to add to the scoreline.
