The Sunday Times back on 23.06.2001
speculated on how England might win the 2006 World Cup.
Sports writer Louise Taylor came up with this England line-up ...
|Chris Kirkland (Liverpool)|
|Owen Hargreaves (Bayern Munich)||Wes Brown (Man Utd)||Rio Ferdinand (Leeds Utd)||Ashley Cole (Arsenal)|
|David Beckham (Man Utd)||Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)||Michael Carrick (West Ham Utd)|
|Kieron Dyer (Newcastle Utd)||Matt Jansen (Blackburn Rovers)|
|Michael Owen (Liverpool)|
|Weirdly enough, Ms. Taylor
went on to name other players who might be members of the squad.
"Sunderland's two footed Gavin McCann should have realised his potential and having eclipsed Nicky Butt, be competing with David Dunn and Lee Bowyer." !! Ms. Taylor goes on to put Joe Cole (West Ham Utd) and Alan Smith (Leeds Utd) in the hole behind Jermain Defoe (West Ham Utd) and Darius Vassell (Aston Villa), with Gareth Barry (Aston Villa) covering the left back slot, with "Campbell and Ledley King offering other options at centre half." With concerns about their off-field actions, Taylor reckons that Bowyer, Jonathan Woodgate (Leeds Utd) and John Terry (Chelsea) could be considered and in goal "if he watches his weight, Paul Robinson will push Kirkland for the goalkeeper's jersey."
Among the Under-21 players mentioned in dispatches are Jermaine Jenas (Newcastle Utd) and Sean Davis (Fulham) for midfield places and Peter Crouch "available to step into the target man role."
Oh, how things change !!
