2002 - 2004 midfielder
Born on 3rd April 1984 in Ypres, Belgium. Height : - . m (' ") Weight : - kgs ( st lb) A young star in his own country, Tottenham bought Jonathan Blondel from Excelsior Mouscron with an eye to the future 0n 7th August 2002. This frustrated the midfielder, who wanted to be in the first team picture straight away and there was talk during his first season at the club of him going on loan or even being transferred back to Belgium as he was homesick. His tenuous grasp of English had not helped the situation, but the arrival of his girlfriend in this country helped him feel better. However, he seemed to have settled down and at the start of 2003-04 was happily involved in pre-season games, where he was able to show his skill on the ball and his quick feet that move the ball past an opponent before they know it. A tigerish tackler, he needed to be more aware of his timing in the tackle, but it was hoped he would be better utilised that season by the manager, in an area where Spurs were a bit light. When David Pleat took over, following Glenn Hoddle's removal from the manager's office, he introduced Jonathan for his first start in the League Cup tie at Coventry and the player hoped he might feature further, as Pleat's reign continued. However, he had two more substitute appearances before returning to the reserve team. Blondel had been an Under-19 and Under-21 international before making two appearances for the full Belgian side. A player with very quick feet and good vision, he lacked the strength to make his mark in the first team and on 28th January 2004 he left Tottenham to join Club Brugges in his home country.
