pascal chimbonda - fact file
2006 - 2008 & 2009 defender
Born on 21st February 1979 in Les Abymes, Guadeloupe.
Height : - 18.01 m (5' 10")
Weight : - 73.8 kgs (11.50 stones)
Started with Port-Louis in Guadeloupe before moving to France to join Le Harve and moved on to Bastia before joining Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2005.
Played 37 league games with one more as substitute, scoring two goals, with five starts and one sub appearance in the cups for Wigan in season 2005-06. This, coupled with his impressive performances, saw him selected for the PFA Premiership Team of the Season.
Made his French debut in a friendly against Denmark in May 2006. Was in the World Cup 2006 squad, but did not play in the tournament.
Chimbonda handed in a transfer request on the last day of the 2005-06 season as he left the field at Highbury, thus ensuring that his career at the club would not be a happy one after that. Straight away a number of clubs indicated that they would be interested in buying the defender, with Wigan setting a figure of £6 million that they were holding out for.
Throughout a summer of bid and rejection, Wigan finally accepted Tottenham's offer, with Chimbonda signing for Spurs on 31st August 2006 for an undisclosed sum, which was believed to be around £4.5 million.
Had a fine first season, attracting attention from Chelsea for his performances, but once Martin Jol had been replaced, he reportedly clashed with new Head Coach Juande Ramos over where he should play in defence, allegedly laughing when he was told he would be playing in central defence.
Was involved in a financial issue which required a Police investigation when there was a loan from his agent, who seemed keen to get Chimbonda a move away from Spurs in the January transfer window, so the papers reported.
Famous (or infamous) for wearing gloves and leggings when the weather drops below anything like warm, he seems to show a bit of attitude when things are not going his way, but he played well in the League Cup Final of 2008 to snuff out the threat of Shaun Wright-Phillips, although he left the field very slowly when he was substituted, displaying a bad attitude that sometimes is voiced by his agent's rumour-mongering of a move away from Spurs.
That happened on 26th July 2008, when he moved to Sunderland.
Astonishingly, Chimbonda made a shock return to White Hart Lane in a deal rumoured to be worth £3 million, as he left Sunderland with Harry Redknapp seeing him as a useful part of the Tottenham squad. However, without making an appearance in the first three games of 2009-10, Chimbonda ended a short and strange period back at Spurs to join Blackburn Rovers for just over £2 million.
His stay at Blackburn Rovers saw him be in and out of the side and he moved to QPR on a free transfer in 2011, but was released at the end of the season on 1st June after the club had been promoted to the Premier League.
Signed for Doncaster Rovers on a deal that would put him in the shop window for other clubs to sign him up, but was released when they were relegated to League One. Without a club for a year, he turned out for Market Drayton and Tranmere Rovers in pre-season friendlies in July 2013.
