FULL NAME :   ARTHUR STANLEY ELMES

Born on 29th December 1927 at North Finchley, London, England

Height : 5' 6"

Weight : 8 st 12 lbs

Not the tallest, Arthur Elmes worked the line as a busy winger, but never made the peace-time first team at White Hart Lane.

Born in North Finchley, he gained notoriety as a promising schoolboy footballer and signed as an amateur in 1945.  In 1945-46 the Tottenham Juniors side he played in won the North London Alliance League Division Two title, the Middlesex Junior Cup and Tottenham Charity Shield.  Elmes also played in the Tottenham Juniors B team who won the London Minor Cup Final beating Campbell 1-0.

Turned professional a year after arriving at the club.  Being short helped him throw defenders off balance with a body swerve and he got his Spurs debut as left winger at White Hart Lane on Easter Monday 1945.

His Football Combination debut was against Crystal Palace on 14th September 1946.

Elmes spent his National Service in the Army and played for them against the Belgian Army, B.A.O.R. and the French Army.  When he came out of the Army in 1948, he went into the A team at Spurs and won the Eastern Counties League championship and East Anglian Cup in the 1949-50 season.

Scored three times in 15 reserve matches and 10 goals in 55 appearances for the A team between 1944 until 1951.  Scored a hat-trick away at Chelmsford City in an Eastern Counties League fixture on 11th April 1951, which must have impressed the Essex side's management, as he joined the Southern League club in August 1951.  Stayed with Chelmsford for six years playing 224 games and netting 61 goals, earning a benefit match against Ipswich Town on 4th May 1956.

Arthur lived in Finchley, but moved to Burnley in 2000.

Arthur Elmes died on 30th December 2005, a day after his 78th birthday.
