Came through the Spurs youth system and made a two first team appearances, before going out on loan to Motherwell in Scotland.
Went to Harold Hill Community College in Romford and then attended the FA National School at Lilleshall, progressing his career as an England Schoolboy and Under-16 international. Came to Spurs as an associated Schoolboy in 1992 and was upgraded to trainee status in the summer of 1995.
An injury just after his games in the first team in the League Cup against Brentford in 1998 hampered his progress and a change in manager, with George Graham coming in, saw his chances diminish and he left to join Barnet in 2001.
Relegation to the Conference was a blow, but he always got good reviews and the fans thought he was capable of playing at a higher level.
When Southend came in for him as a Third Division side, he fitted into their midfield and has been a regular in their two promotion winning sides to take them into the Championship. However, after two seasons in that division, they suffered a relegation to League One and a failure to go up at the first attempt coincided with Gower's contract ending and having turned down a new deal with the Shrimpers, he chose to move to Swansea City, who were one of the teams promoted to the Championship, in June 2008.
His spell at Vetch Field and then the Liberty Stadium coincided with their promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs and he once more played in the top flight.
As he reached the veteran stage of his career, the midfielder was loaned out to Charlton Athletic in 2013.
