Came through the Spurs youth system as a defender, winning Republic of Ireland Under-21 honours, but unable to break into the first team squad, Kevin made the switch to Southend United in 1998.
Turned into a midfielder and made captain, Maher has played over 300 games for the Shrimpers, seeing them into the Championship, through successive promotions from League Two and One, although relegated back to League One at the end of the 2006-07 season.
Went on loan to
Gillingham from March 2008 until the end of that season,
then for the following season, he was signed up by
Oldham Athletic, as they made an attempt to get out of
League One. As the club had a poor season and did
not achieve their promotion aim, Maher was allowed to
leave and he was snapped up on a free transfer by former
club Gillingham on a two year contract, but their season
ended up with them going down to League Two.
Released by the Gills, Maher moved nearer to his
birth-place with a free transfer to Dagenham and
Redbridge.
