Born in  on 18th March 1977 in Chester, England.

Height : - 176.5 cm  (' ")

Weight : - 78.1 kgs  (st lbs)

Came through the youth system at Crewe Alexandra under Dario Gradi's guidance and went on to make over 150 appearances for the Railwaymen.  His league debut came on 11th December 1993 v Colchester United

Moved to Liverpool for £3million on 15th July 1997.

Won the FA, League and UEFA Cups in 2001, being in the FA and UEFA Cup Final starting line-ups.

Played 200 times for the Reds and won five trophies in seven years hitting the net 44 times.

Spent a spell back on loan at Crewe from 9th February 1999 to 10th May 1999, making sixteen appearance sand scoring one goal.

Joined Charlton Athletic on 10th August 2004 for £2.5 million and went on to play 60 times and two substitute appearances, scoring 10 times.

Fell out with manager Alan Curbishley and was signed by Spurs on transfer deadline day - 31st January 2006 - for £2 million.  An accomplished passer who was also good at getting on the end of moves to score, Murphy also brought a wealth of experience to the side.  He lacked blistering pace, but was a busy midfielder who read the game well.

Had an injury hit time during his time at Tottenham, but his experience came in useful in the UEFA Cup campaign of 2006-07.

Was Steven Gerrard's best man at his wedding in the summer of 2007, which also saw him leave Spurs.  Frustrated by his lack of opportunities in the first team and with Martin Jol wanting to reshape his midfield, Murphy moved on to Fulham for an undisclosed fee to work for new boss Lawrie Sanchez.  Unfortunately, the manager did not last too long and new man Roy Hodgson faced a relegation battle, which Murphy played a major part in.  On the last day of the season, he rose to head the only goal of the game at Portsmouth to secure the Cottagers place in the Premier League for season 2008-09.  Was a major factor in Fulham's progress to the Europa League final in 2010 and played on with the Cottagers until the summer of 2012, when he was allowed to leave to join Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer, signing a two year deal.
