Started at Holbrook Colliery and joined Chesterfield from there in November 1936.
League debut on 3rd April 1937 against Blackburn Rovers.
Played two more games before World War Two broke out, when he became a Physical Education instructor in the RAF and Sid was a war-time guest player for Fulham, Blackpool, Bradford City, Blackburn Rovers and Chester. Sid played once for Birmingham during 1943-44.
After the war, he rejoined Chesterfield in March 1946 and played a total of 61 matches and scored 18 goals for the Spireites.
Joined Birmingham for a reported fee of £5,000, but made only five appearances netting two goals in that time, before moving onto Luton Town.
Went on to play for Nottingham Forest, Mansfield Town and Scunthorpe United.
Played a career total of 202 games and scored 54 goals.
His next stop was non-league Whitstable Town and then he player-managed Spalding United. Played for Heanor Town and ended up as manager of Lockheed Leamington.
