Took over as Luton Town manager in January 1978 aged 33, as then one of the youngest manager sin the league.

Pleat had been a player for Nottingham Forest, Luton Town, Shrewsbury Town, Exeter City and Peterborough United, as well as winning England youth caps as a winger.

Injuries hit his career and this had prompted him to take FA coaching courses, firstly becoming a manager with non-league Nuneaton Borough.  In 1975 he took charge of the Luton Town reserve team.
