Having started his career at West Ham United, John Smith signed for Spurs and was a useful squad member without establishing himself in the first team on a regular basis.
Playing at either right
midfield or as an inside forward, Smith covered for
injuries during his four years at White Hart Lane, being
part of the group of players who won the Double, making
a single league appearance. Never a heavy
goal-scorer, he was more of a hard-working midfielder,
who made chances for others.
Leaving Tottenham to find more regular first team
action, his journey went from Coventry City, Leyton
Orient, Swindon Town, Walsall and Dundalk in the
Republic of Ireland. John spent 1972-73 as manager
of Walsall and his time at Dundalk doubled playing with
managing.
Enjoyed success while at
Swindon Town, as part of the promotion side in 1968-69,
then won a League Cup Winners Cup medal in 1969 and an
Anglo-Italian Cup winners medal in 1969-70.
John Smith was working as a steward at the McVities
social club in North West London and died in 1988.
