Smith trained twice a week with Rotherham and spent a few days with Sheffield United and Burnley before signing as an apprentice at Spurs in July 1972. A regular in the youth and reserve teams in his early years at White Hart Lane, Ian progressed to being chosen for the England youth squad. Upgraded to a full professional in April 1974. After a brief spell in the first team,
