Born in North Shields, he joined Spurs in 1950 but had to wait until October, 1954, to make his senior debut when he played in a friendly at Queens Park Rangers. We lost that game 2-1 with Alf Ramsey our goal-scorer.
Others in the team that day included England international goalkeeper Ted Ditchburn, Charlie Withers, Bill Nicholson, Eddie Baily and Len Duquemin. Douglas was released at the end of that season and returned to North Shields where he continued to play football until into his 40s.
Doug Spivey died on 14th July 2015 and his funeral took place in Tynemouth on 21st July 2015.
