Geret van Driel, who played for Tottenham in 1914, was said to be the first Dutch professional footballer.
He won 1912 and 1913 Dutch titles with Sparta Rotterdam, having started his career with Dordrecht between 1908 and 1911.
Geret signed for Spurs on professional terms of £1.50 a week and worked in the local JAP motor works during the war, playing for Spurs until February 1919 making 24 appearances, with his early appearances in the reserves being played out under the names of Smith and Lindsay.
