Works with Dr. Brian Curtin, the club doctor with responsibility for the fitness of the playing staff.

Spends a match-day morning at Cheshunt dealing with injuries to youth and junior players.

Gets to the Lane just before one o'clock and he gets his treatment equipment ready for first team players, who arrive at 13:30.

He binds ankles, treats blisters and gives players pre-match massages.

During a match he watches with a different eye to most inside the stadium. “It is my job to watch for injuries. After a hefty tackle, most people continue to follow the ball. I tend to linger on that tackle – if it's against a Spurs player – to see how he regains his feet.”

Mike is the first to the scene of the injury, with a signal to the main stand for Dr. Curtin to go to the dressing room should a player need stitches.

“It happened here against Ipswich. John Duncan was kicked in the face and he was taken off, stitched up by the doctor and was back on the pitch within five minutes.”

After the game, Varney patches up cuts and deals with knocks that take between five minutes and an hour.

On away trips, the mobile ultra-sonic machine goes on the coach to allow treatment as soon as the squad arrive at the hotel. “This can make all the difference between a player being fit or unable to play.”

Treatment materials and the medical kit are laid out in the dressing room on the morning of the match by Mike, with treatment sometimes being applied on the way home in the coach.

Varney is a qualified Remedial Gymnast and a fitness fanatic. Often plays squash at Broxbourne at 07:00 and sometimes cycles to White Hart Lane from Hoddesdon.

He believes in extending the treatment of injuries to players at grass roots level and set up the Association of Trainers and Remedial Therapists, while also speaking on injury treatment for the FA.

Lives in Hoddesdon.
