Joined up with his former Ipswich Town boss Bobby Robson at Newcastle United from Spurs as Chief Scout.
Started as a Newcastle United player in May 1959 Ė signed from Cumbrian amateur side Cleator Moor Celtic for £25. A change of manager saw him sold off to Bournemouth in 1962 and he went on to play for Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town, where he met Bobby Robson in 1969. He let Woods go as a scout and he went to Watford and then became youth team coach at Blackburn Rovers. In 1973, he bumped into Robson again at a Bolton Wanderers v Ipswich Town match and Robson offered him a position as the youth team coach. At Portman Road, he filled the roles of coach, assistant manager, scout and then Chief Scout.
In 1998, George Graham and David Pleat persuaded him to join them at White Hart Lane and during his time at Tottenham, he brought Tim Sherwood, Sergei Rebrov, Chris Perry and Oyvind Leonhardsen among others to White Hart Lane.
But Robsonís friendship returned him to St. Jamesí Park after a tough battle with Spurs, who did not want to let him go.
