28.04.1900 Spurs faced Kentish opponents with a trip to New Brompton (nowadays known as Gillingham).   With title contenders Portsmouth offering New Brompton a bonus should they beat Tottenham and with Spurs travelling without Jimmy Melia and Bob Stormont, it was in front of a large number of Spurs fans in the crowd that the game kicked off nervously.

Having won the toss, Spurs skipper Jim McNaught elected to make the home team play the first half into the bright sun.  However, despite a pacy start with Tottenham pressing the New Brompton goal, the home keeper Carter kept out everything thrown at him.

Even without Tom Pangbourne, the regular New Brompton forward (who was about to sign for Spurs), their first attack ended in a goal.  It was halfway through the first half when Gladwell got on the end of a breakaway and found the net past George Clawley in the Tottenham goal.

It was a blow to Tottenham's ambitions, which was almost made worse as the hosts had the ball in the net once more, although clearly offside, it was this time ruled out.  This restricted Tottenham's attacking instincts and lead to no further scoring before the half-time whistle.

Inside forward and manager John Cameron inspired his team at the interval, with a team-talk that got them moving in the second half, producing a goal three minutes after the restart.  And it was Cameron who was on the mark, picking a well placed shot, with no great power, but putting it out of Carter's reach.

Spurs were aware that a win would ensure the championship, so they did not settle for a draw and the game moved from end to end, as both teams looked to secure a winning goal.  Time was running out and when Harry Erentz lobbed a high ball into the penalty area, the New Brompton goalie came out for the ball but could only manage a punch that went towards David Copeland.  The Spurs inside forward brought the ball under control and knocked the ball in from close range.

With money at stake for the home players, they went on the search for an equaliser and the Tottenham defence stood firm with a Spurs attack coming the closest to notching the next goal.

At the final whistle, the Spurs fans in the ground were quick to chair their heroes off on their shoulders, as the first league win was confirmed with the 2-1 victory.  Similar celebrations were played out back in N17 and at Holborn Viaduct station where many supporters made their way to greet the Southern League champions as they returned to London by train.

When the team disembarked at Bruce Grove station, they were met by the Tottenham Town Band, who marched back with them on the short journey to White Hart Lane, where the celebrations continued.
