Spurs lost out in their opening FA Premier Academy League fixture of the season at Middlesbrough despite a spirited fight-back.

When the home side moved long the left wing in the 12th minute, the resulting cross was headed in at the far post to give Boro the lead, but Tottenham should have equalised when Kudos Oyenuga was brought down in the area and Harry Kane had the penalty kick saved.

Poor defensive work let Boro in for a second goal on 18 minutes, but Anton Blackwood hit back with a goal by shooting home from inside the penalty area with 25 minutes gone.  Boro re-established their two goal advantage with a third goal scored before the half time whistle.

Tottenham were better in the second half, but could only pull the score back to 2-3 with a fine goal from Paul-Jose Mpoku to begin the campaign with a defeat.

Spurs fell behind to a goal with only 10 minutes remaining, but battled back to gain a draw with a late goal.

Spurs goalkeeper Lee Butcher kept Boro at bay with a couple of good saves, before Tottenham lost Ryan Mason in the 25th minute with a knee injury.  His replacement Alex Olsen had a good game up front, but despite a lot of possession, the home side scored after 80 minutes.  A Middlesbrough attack broke down, but resulted in a free-kick, which was cleared, but when the ball came back in, it resulted in a goal from a good finish.

The lead only lasted for five minutes, as Sol Asajile made ground on the right, before he exchanged passes with Yaser Kasim, leaving him space to find Jake Livermore, who produced a fine shot from 20 yards to level the scores.  Tottenham almost won it with Olsen's goal ruled out, but it was a good first result of the season for the travelling Spurs team.
