Match report Spurs marched on to third place in the Premier League table with a confident 3-0 away win at Carrow Road over Norwich City, paved by an early goal and Harry Kane wrapping thing sup with an equally late strike. After the much changed side for the FA Cup tie at Colchester, the regular first teamers were out in force, with Kevin Wimmer coming in for the injured Jan Vertonghen. The way the team started, it looked like they were all up for it, even though Norwich had the benefit of a ten day break since their last game. Obviously, the Barcelona sun had done it's work. Norwich also made a lot of changes with new players coming in and some who let five in against Liverpool going out. Spurs kicked off, but lost possession by putting the ball out, but they soon had it back and won a corner on the left. Eriksen's ball in was cleared, but Son played it to Toby Alderweireld inside the box on the right, allowing him a shot that was blocked. It ran across the box to Christian Eriksen and his low first time shot was well stopped by Declan Rudd in the City goal, but the ball went out in front of goal and Dele Alli was on hand to knock the ball into the net from a couple of yards out. 100 seconds into the game and Tottenham were 1-0 ahead. Norwich's defensive work was slack and might be a pointer to why they conceded five to Liverpool. Tottenham continued to pass well, move well and push into the Norwich half. They won corners and from one Alderweireld had a free header that he put just wide. Kane took on Pinto on our left wing and pulled the ball back low to the near post, where Son tried an audacious flick, but the ball hit the side-netting. When Alli put Kane in on the edge of the box with 28 minutes gone, the forward struck a low shot that Rudd kept out, but Alli was onto it again and this time he was bundled over by Sebastien Bassong from behind. Kevin Friend had ignored a previous shout for a spot-kick when Alli was knocked over by Klose, but this time pointed to the spot. It was left to Harry Kane to step and up slide the ball in to the keeper's left with Rudd having dived the other way. 2-0. Kane was continuing to cause problems and cut in from the left to smack a shot that beat Rudd and hit the base of the keeper's right hand post. Chadli replaced Dele Alli at the break, as the young midfielder was feeling under the weather, which was supposed to be the excuse Norwich were using. Bassong thought he had got a goal against his old team, but was ruled rightly offside and Kane had a chance when running free to the left side, but he pulled his effort across goal. Not as much as Christian Eriksen did, when his shot almost ended up going sideways !! Kane did better when two Norwich players tackled each other and Harry beat Bassong to the ball and ran right to shoot across Rudd and the ball once more came off the post and out. Things got a bit frantic towards the end with players complaining to the referee about decisions, but the booking of Rose for time-wasting was a bit of a joke, when Olsson got away with persistent fouling, although Tettey got booked for a silly foul, after not making too many in the match. It was his tenth of the season, so I guess his name must have been pencilled in by the ref before kick off. Tottenham were still working hard at the end with Christian Eriksen robbing Olsson wide on the right and the ball went through to Kane, who ran in and bent the ball over Rudd from inside the box to make it 3-0. It was a nice finish after his previous effort had struck the woodwork and showed that he has the mentality of a great goal-scorer, putting that out of his mind for the next chance to come along. Norwich hardly threatened. Two weak penalty appeals from Naismith came when he was the aggressor and Bonkani fired a weak low shot straight at Lloris, then in the second half, Naismith glanced a header from a Jarvis cross behind him and the ball floated wide of the goal. They have spent a lot of money, but do not seem to be getting much return on it with Pinto and Klose being poor in this game.. Little else happened in the time remaining before the final whistle and Spurs ran out 3-0 winners over Norwich City, just as they had done over the Canaries at the Lane. It had been a relatively straightforward victory, helped by some poor defending and you would think that if City intend to keep this up until the end of the season ,they might be down among the relegation places. As for Tottenham, this win lifted us into third position and with the next two games against Watford and Manchester City, they could be defining our season. We have the players to cope, but will we put in the performances needed to take us further forward ? Dan Vertonghen |
