Dele Alli's fine volley warned Spurs a point after going behind to old boy Aaron Lennon, but the feeling of two points being dropped is one which shows how far Tottenham have come in a short time under Mauricio Pochettino.
Spurs had kept faith with Tom Carroll, with Ben Davies preferred at left back to Danny Rose, while the remainder of the team was as usual. They set about the game with an energy from the start and pushed Everton back, making them look like the away side. The Toffees seemed happy to concede large amounts of possession and allow Tottenham to come onto them. This produced an early chance when after a long passing move, Walker drove a low ball across the face of goal and Coleman got it away before it reached Alli at the far post. Spurs were enjoying a long stay in the Everton half and Walker tried a shot that was blocked before Harry Kane tried an effort from 25 yards, which was blocked, but Spurs picked up the loose ball and it came back to Kane, who drilled a low shot from outside the box - right of centre - which beat Howard, hit the keeper's right post and then rolled across goal and out for a goal kick ! How does that happen ?
Alli tried a volley from Walker's deep cross, but got under it and it looped to Howard, then after Eriksen was bundled over outside the D of the penalty area, Lamela took the free-kick which hit the wall and went for a corner.
While Spurs seemed to be
controlling possession, a challenge by Baines on Eriksen on the left
gave Barkley the chance to hit a diagonal ball to Lukaku in the box
and his header down gave Aaron Lennon the time to take a touch and
shoot past Lloris before Alderweireld and Vertonghen could close him
down. 22 minutes in and Tottenham were a goal down when they should
have been level and I suppose that it had to be Lennon who scored it
wouldn't it !
The hosts were on the attack
when the final whistle went, so Spurs were as glad to hear it as
Everton had been the half-time whistle.
Everton were once known as
St. Luke's Wanderers, as they had strayed from the faith of the
Anglican Church located alongside their Goodison Park ground.
