Spurs
went through the month of September unbeaten with seven wins and two
draws, with almost a new side ten players making their debuts on the
2nd of the month against Glossop North End, as Spurs won the
friendly 3-2 in their gold and chocolate kit in front of a crowd of
2,000. The only surviving player from the previous campaign was
Jock Montgomery.
Two days later the same team met Sheppey United in an away game in the Southern League, which ended 1-1 . Spurs had to play without James Devlin, who was suspended by the club until 30th April 1898, because he signed for Millwall Athletic while still registered with Tottenham. The matter went to the FA, but was resolved within four weeks, when he signed for the Lions officially. The Royal Scots Fusillers were beaten 12-0 at home in a friendly, with the goals from James Davidson (4), Bill Joyce and Tom Meade struck hat-tricks and there was a goal apiece for Bob Tannahill and David Black. All five were also scorers against Millwall on 25th September in the Southern League, with 10,000 watching the match – the biggest attendance at the Lane all season. Former Spurs player Billy Almond appeared for Millwall.
