A fiercely competitive
defender, who had a troubled time at Paris Saint
Germain, was targeted as the player to compete for the
right back slot with Kieran Trippier and soon proved a
favourite with the Tottenham fans.
His youth career was spent with Lens, starting with the
club in 2006 and making his debut in 2009, staying with
the Ligue 1 club for three years as a professional
before moving to Toulouse. While there, he went on
loan to Paris Saint Germain in 2014 for a season, with
an option to buy him and the move became permanent in
2015. His stay in the French capital was initially
successful, but it ended with him criticising team-mates
and calling Laurent Blanc a homophobic insult in an
interview that saw him banished to the reserves.
Off the field he was involved in an assault on a police
officer outside a nightclub that earned him a two month
prison sentence. He was banned form entering
England because of this, so missed PSG's visit to
Arsenal - a club he said he would have happily signed
for.In the summer
of 2017, Tottenham moved for the right back and while
the transfer was delayed by the suspended prison
sentence, but a work permit was obtained and he made his
debut in the Champions League group game at home to
Borussia Dortmund. The worries about his troubled
background came to the fore when he was sent off in his
first Premier League game at West Ham United London, for
two fouls on Andy Carroll in quick succession.
However, following his suspension, he fought his way
back into the team and looked a strong presence both in
defence and attacking on the overlap.
