Born in Hackney, London,
England. Went to Morpeth School. Played for East London, London, Middlesex and England Boys teams. Played nine times for England Boys including matches against Germany and Holland. Signed as an apprentice in May 1970, but turned professional in 1972. In season 1970-71 he played 26 games for
the Juniors scoring 10 goals – four from penalties. Came from a footballing family, as his uncle was Arsenal and England outside right Danny Clapton, another uncle Denis also played for Arsenal and his father Les played for non-league Leytonstone before managing the Edmonton-Haringey club. In January 1975, when he was made available for transfer at his own request and went on loan to Rangers of Johannesburg, South Africa in March for the start of their season. Left Tottenham to join Charlton Athletic. Lived in Hackney in 1974.
