19.01.2005 | Spurs
won a close FA Youth Cup tie with Liverpool at Anfield on penalties to
go through to the Fifth Round. The hosts took an early lead in the seventh minute, with Danny Guthrie and Conal Platt linking well to put full back Danny Smith through on the overlap. Smith's ball across the six yard area was tapped home by Karl Noon to put Liverpool 1-0 ahead. Tottenham hit back quickly though, as Andy Barcham took a through pass from Mark Wright and 30 yards out, swerved past one player in the area and buried a low drive past keeper Roberts to make it 1-1 within five minutes. Chances came at both ends, as Forecast saved well from Platt and then three efforts in a goalmouth scramble at the Liverpool end from Barcham and Simon Dawkins were kicked off the line, before the keeper dived on the ball in the 22nd minute. Barcham's shot brought a very good save from Roberts and substitute Radwan Hamed's pace always made the Reds back line wary of a breakthrough. Barcham turned away from Threlfall on the halfway line and raced through to make Roberts save once more, ten minutes after the interval and there was some good fortune for the Liverpool keeper when he dropped a cross, which looked suspiciously over the line before he grabbed it back and the ref waved play on. Spurs had a shout for a penalty, when O'Hara's shot was parried by the 'Pool keeper, but was seemingly dragged back as he went for the rebound, although the referee did not whistle. While the home team had lots of the ball, they could not find a way through to goal and it was their own keeper who once more denied Tottenham with a save 14 minutes from time from Scott Thyer and then Ifil had a shot deflected wide. Tommy Forecast had to be quick on his feet to reach a Barratt header that floated over him, but he tipped it over the bar and right at the death, Liverpool almost snuck a winner, but when substitute Barnett played Noon in, his shot was too near Forecast and he saved it well with his legs. Into extra time, Leigh Mills went close with a header from a corner. Then a substitute almost scored, when Phil Townley shot well over the top from Platt's cross and Barcham seized on a Roberts fumble to crash a shot against the bar. Forecast raced out to block a Hitchen burst through the Spurs defence, but there were few other chances and the match went to a penalty shoot-out to decide who would go through. Liverpool captain Danny Guthrie took the first penalty and Forecast leapt to save it with a fine stop. Jamie O'Hara stepped up and scored the first Tottenham spot-kick, before defender Threlfall stepped up to score his attempt. Phil Ifil and Charlie Lee scored their penalties, being equalled by Townley, before James Frayne's kick was saved by Tommy Forecast. Scott Thyer could have won the game for Tottenham, but Roberts saved his penalty with his legs, but the linesman deemed that he had moved before the kick was taken, so Thyer had a second chance and made no mistake this time to wrap up a 4-2 penalty shoot-out win.
